3 Essentials: Good Preparation, Many Practices and Self-discipline

Last week, there was the F.2 inter-class English drama competition in the hall. I had watched the competition and I want to share with you two points. The observation can apply to all other forms and students.

First, for the winning classes, all the students on the stage remembered the words very well. They made a lot of pops for the drama and they had good cooperation. From the performances, it showed that the winning classes had done good preparation and had done a lot of practices beforehand. Because of good preparation and many practices, students of such classes showed confidence on the stage and therefore they won. However, for the classes, which got no prizes or awards, some students of such classes did not prepare well. They did not have great sense of responsibility and had too-low expectation of themselves. They did not pay good effort to remember the words and so they did not speak loudly. Although there were students in such classes who had paid effort in such classes, the other irresponsible ones spoiled the whole drama in their classes. To such classes and students, I felt a great pity because I was sure all the students could achieve the task pretty well.

Second, it is about the audience in the competition, that is those students who did not need to perform on the stage but just sat in their seats. In general, most of the students could discipline themselves not to talk too often but still some were not good enough. Some students kept talking and showed no respect to the performers during the competition. They might think that the competition was not their business and so, they had no interest at all. This was a very wrong concept. We have to learn to speak at the right time and at the right place. In particular, the competition was not a show time or a playtime. It was supposed to be a learning time. We should not mix up the aims of the events. As an audience in a learning activity, we need to learn to listen and watch the performance quietly and attentively. I hope our students will not be too self-centered and will be considerate. Our attitude and behavior will affect one another and after all, affect the whole event and whole atmosphere.

Let’s recall back the Japanese earthquake on 11th March. Although the spread of nuclear radiation is at a critical stage now, people all over the world are still impressed by the self-disciplined behavior and performance of the Japanese people during the earthquake and tsunami, right? Why could they do so even in a time of crisis and danger? Their good preparation for the coming of natural disasters, their regular and many practices, their sense of responsibility, their patience, perseverance and their mutual support all explained why. Let’s learn from them in this aspect. That’s my sharing for today.
