On March 12, 2023, the Life-wide Learning Committee of our school took seven Form 4 and Form 5 students to visit the “Trapped Experience Centre” organized by the Society for Community Organization (SoCO) and attended the opening ceremony of the exhibition at the invitation of the organization. The event received extensive media attention and coverage, including in Ming Pao, Sing Tao Daily, Economic Daily, Wen Wei Po, RTHK, Cable TV, am730, and Hong Kong 01.

On the day of the visit, the students were first led by a tour guide to visit the three subdivided units in the “Trapped Experience Centre”. As the exhibition retained the original appearance of the subdivided units, the students were able to experience the living environment of residents living in such units as authentically as possible. Later, the students had exchanges with several tour guides and learned about the life stories of grassroots citizens, including new immigrants who worked hard but suffered from social discrimination, and former drug addicts who transformed their lives with the help of social workers and religious beliefs. The students came to understand the difficulties faced by grassroots citizens and learned to care for people’s different needs while also feeling grateful for their own abundant and fulfilling lives.

After the visit, the students participated in the opening ceremony of the Trapped Experience Centre. The guests on that day included Ms. SZE Lai Shan, Deputy Director of the Society for Community Organization, and two Legislative Council members, Ms. Doreen KONG Yuk-foon and Mr. Andrew LAM Siu-lo, whose speeches greatly benefited the students and further encouraged them to think about how different stakeholders in society can work together to help more people in need. Our teacher, Mr. SIU Ho-shing, also gave a speech, praising the Trapped Experience Centre for providing students with a real learning experience, which he believed is a valuable community learning resource for promoting life-wide learning in education. Our school hopes that through life-wide learning activities like this one, students can broaden their horizons and become more insightful and independent young people.
